रविवार सुबह नेपाल के मनास्लू ट्रेकिंग एरिया में बूढ़ी गंडकी नदी में आई भयानक बाढ़ ने एक बार फिर बड़ा नुकसान किया है। इस भयानक आपदा में करीब 40 घर, छह पुल और हाइड्रोइलेक्ट्रिक प्रोजेक्ट से जुड़ा इंफ्रास्ट्रक्चर बह गया है। इस हादसे में 10 लोग लापता बताए जा रहे हैं। ट्रेकिंग सीजन चल रहा है, इसलिए इस बाढ़ के कारण 150 से ज़्यादा विदेशी टूरिस्ट फंस गए हैं। अच्छी बात यह है कि समय पर SMS अलर्ट मिलने से कई लोकल नागरिक सुरक्षित जगहों और ऊंची जगहों पर चले गए हैं। इससे बड़ी संख्या में लोगों की जान जाने से बच गई है। फिलहाल, राहत और बचाव का काम युद्ध स्तर पर चल रहा है।

A flash flood carrying mud and debris hit the Budhi Gandaki River in northern Gorkha district around 4 a.m. on Oct. 11. Local officials estimate 35 to 40 houses were swept away in Jagat Bagar, Salleri and Ghattikhola in Chumnubri Rural Municipality. The Soti Khola bridge near Arughat was completely washed away, and a 22-meter section of the Arughat bridge linking Gorkha and Dhading was destroyed, according to Nepal’s Department of Roads. Radio Nepal, citing an assistant chief district officer, reported six bridges swept away, two motorable and four suspension; other outlets count fewer. Parts of a hydropower project under construction in Salleri were also destroyed. Six people were airlifted from landslide-threatened Jagat village, and residents of Machhakhola, Soti, Arkhet and Arughat were told to move to higher ground. The river remains above the danger level. Reports vary: at least ten missing per Radio Nepal, five per the Kathmandu Post, four per other outlets. I found no confirmed deaths. Claims of around 150 flooded homes downstream in Arughat are unverified.
Preliminary reports point to a landslide above Siuribas; residents suspect the Syar stream, a tributary of the Budhi Gandaki, may have been blocked. This is not confirmed.
The flood comes weeks after floods and landslides in August killed at least 1,455 people, with 5,285 missing as of Oct. 5, according to Reuters. A separate avalanche has left 14 Nepalis missing on Himlung.
A river that fluctuates above danger level, damaged bridges and a possible landslide dam make the next hours as dangerous as the first. What to watch: the final missing count, whether the river keeps rising, evacuation of downstream villages, and the cause of the surge.

सेना और बचाव टीमों ने अब तक 49 लोगों को सुरक्षित बचा लिया है। प्रशासन ने नागरिकों को सुरक्षित जगहों पर जाने का आदेश दिया है और निचले इलाकों के लिए चेतावनी जारी की है। रविवार सुबह 4 बजे बूढ़ी गंडकी नदी में अचानक बड़ी बाढ़ आ गई। पानी और मलबे के तेज़ बहाव से इलाके में बहुत नुकसान हुआ है। अचानक आई बाढ़ के बाद, जैसे ही आस-पास के पानी के रास्तों से तेज़ आवाज़ें सुनाई दीं, चुमालिंग और लोकपा जैसी बस्तियों के लोग और वहाँ रुके टूरिस्ट अपनी जान बचाने के लिए सुरक्षित जगहों पर भागे।
मनासलू ट्रेकिंग इलाके में 150 से ज़्यादा विदेशी टूरिस्ट फंसे हुए हैं। अधिकारियों का अंदाज़ा है कि लैंडस्लाइड की वजह से किसी सहायक नदी का बहाव कुछ समय के लिए रुक गया होगा। इस वजह से बड़ी मात्रा में पानी और मलबा जमा हो गया होगा। इसके बाद, उम्मीद जताई जा रही है कि पानी का तेज़ बहाव कम हो गया होगा। हालाँकि, बाढ़ का सही कारण अभी साफ़ नहीं है। इस आपदा में उंगिलुंग नदी के पास रहने वाले पाँच लोग लापता हैं। इनमें दो महिलाएँ और तीन पुरुष शामिल हैं। इसके अलावा, चार से पाँच चरवाहे भी लापता बताए जा रहे हैं।
बाढ़ में लगभग 40 घर और एक प्राइमरी स्कूल पूरी तरह से तबाह हो गए हैं। दूसरे 20 से 22 घरों के भी गिरने का खतरा है। बाढ़ की वजह से छह पुल बह गए हैं, जिससे दूर-दराज के ग्रामीण इलाकों का संपर्क पूरी तरह टूट गया है। सलेरी में बन रहे 341 MW के बूढ़ी गंडकी हाइड्रोइलेक्ट्रिक प्रोजेक्ट के कंस्ट्रक्शन के लिए बनाया गया बेस और उसके इक्विपमेंट भी बाढ़ के पानी में पूरी तरह बर्बाद हो गए हैं।
अरुघाट में बूढ़ी गंडकी नदी का पानी का लेवल पांच मीटर के खतरे के निशान को पार कर 8.4 मीटर तक पहुंच गया है। नदी का पानी का लेवल मापने के लिए बनाया गया ऑब्जर्वेशन स्टेशन भी बाढ़ के बहाव में बह गया। इस वजह से नदी के पानी के लेवल की सही जानकारी मिलने में दिक्कतें आ रही हैं। प्रशासन ने धाडिंग, तनहुं, चितवन और पूर्वी व पश्चिमी नवलपरासी जिलों के लोगों को सुरक्षित जगहों पर जाने की चेतावनी दी है। त्रिशूली और नारायणी नदियों के किनारे रहने वाले लोगों को भी नदी के किनारों से दूर रहने और सुरक्षित जगहों पर जाने की सख्त सलाह दी गई है।
